Be sure your car is parked on level ground and that your engine has been cooling down for at least 10-15 minutes

Remove your dipstick and wipe it from handle to tip with a clean rag or paper towel
Reinsert the dipstick, being sure to fully reinsert the dipstick. Wait for a moment, then remove it again
Check the oil on both sides of the dipstick. The indicators towards the bottom of the stick will show you if the oil is low, normal, or high
