Summer has arrived and with it comes some exciting things to explore. Just a short drive from Duluth, in Atlanta, there are various events to keep the whole family entertained all summer long. From ice cream festivals to blues and bluegrass, there is something for every interest.

 

Kicking off the festivities is the 9th Annual Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival in Tavern Park on Sunday, July 16 from 1 PM-5 PM. Visitors can enjoy a variety of tomato-based treats prepared by dozens of chefs and live music. Fans of food, and particularly tomatoes, will be overjoyed to experience this unique event.

 

On July 22, it is time to head over to Piedmont Park to experience the Atlanta Ice Cream Festival. This event was founded in 2010 and engages with the community by selecting a local non-profit health agency to support and raise awareness for their health and wellness initiatives. The Ice Cream Festival encourages visitors to enjoy tasty treats while also learning about a number of health and wellness engagement activities and fitness routines. The schedule for the day is as follows:

 

  • 10 AM 5K Fight Cancer Walk kickstarts the event,

  • 11 AM opening of the free Wellness Pavilion

  • The Young Chef Pavilion Showcase from 1 PM-2 PM

  • Ice cream eating competition at 3 PM.

 

This event is great for every age and a perfect opportunity to enjoy live local music and a cold, sweet treat in the summer heat.

 

August 12 marks the arrival of the 17th Annual Decatur BBQ Blues and Bluegrass Festival at Harmony Park. Enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of classic Southern BBQ and over 7 hours of original live blues and bluegrass music. There are even vegetarian options available. Get fantastic food and enjoy great music with the family. Children under 12 receive free admission with a paying adult, and leashed pets are allowed.

 

Friday, September 1 is the AJC Decatur Book Festival. This free event allows you to mingle with your favorite authors, pick up a book you have been excited to read, or discover a new author to enjoy. There are a variety of activities, such as:

 

  • Cooking demonstrations

  • Writing workshops

  • Poetry slams

  • A parade

  • Author signings

  • Interactive children’s area

 

The AJC Decatur Book Festival is the largest independent book festival in the country with tents, tables, or booths where you can buy books or other reading-related products, visit panels of authors discussing themes common to all their work, hear authors read from their books or discuss their work, and attend a keynote speech by authors of national or international importance. There is something for everyone at this book festival!
