Did you know that the cornucopia that we widely acknowledge as the symbol for Thanksgiving dates back to ancient Greece? In Latin, cornu copiae, meaning “horn of plenty” played a role in Greek Mythology. The cornucopia was an enchanted severed goat horn that Zeus created. The horn was said to produce a never-ending supply of whatever the owner asked for. What would you ask the horn to make for you?

People all over the world celebrate Thanksgiving (or their fall celebration) differently. Here are some fun ways for your family to, add some new traditions from around the world to your Thanksgiving day festivities, and help our local Duluth area.

From the British Isles: Families would celebrate what is known as Lammas Day, which was celebrated by every family bringing a loaf of bread to church, made form the grains from the first fall harvest. The bread would then be blessed to give thanks for the year’s harvest.

Get Involved: You and your family could take a loaf of bread to your local food bank or homeless center. One such center would be the Duluth Cooperative Ministries- Hands of Christ.

From China : China’s fall celebration is called the Moon Festival (Chung Ch’ui), it is held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, which usually falls in September or October. It’s the time when the moon is at its brightest and fullest all year.

Get Involved: A traditional treat made for the Moon Festival is the Mooncake, gather your family and friends and try out this new dessert this year. A recipe can be found here.

From Canada: Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October. The tradition was founded in 1578 after Martin Forsbisher arrived in Newfoundland, Canada and celebrated with a small feast.

Get Involved: Your family could provide a meal for a family in need by donating food or your time to your local food bank, such as Carepointe.
